Universal Studios Florida vs Islands of Adventure

Islands of Adventure is the better park and the better one-day ticket for most groups — it has the stronger ride slate and the best coaster in Florida. Universal Studios Florida wins if Diagon Alley is the reason you came, if anyone gets motion sick, or if your youngest is under 40 inches.

The verdict

Islands of Adventure on a one-day ticket, for most groups. Universal Studios Florida if Diagon Alley is the point, if anyone in the party gets motion sick, or if your youngest child is under 40 inches.

These two parks face each other across a ten-minute walk and they are built on opposite principles. Islands of Adventure is a ride park: The Incredible Hulk Coaster at 54 inches, Doctor Doom's Fearfall at 52, Jurassic World VelociCoaster at 51, Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at 48. Fourteen of its attractions measure you at the entrance. Universal Studios Florida is a screen park: Transformers, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, The Simpsons Ride and Fast & Furious – Supercharged are all screens in front of a motion base, and Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts and Men in Black Alien Attack lean on screens too.

For a group that clears 51 inches and likes going fast, Islands of Adventure is the strongest single park day in Orlando and the choice is not close. Jurassic World VelociCoaster is the best roller coaster in Florida — two launches, a 155-foot top hat, four inversions, and a run of track that skims the lagoon at speed. Hagrid's is the more inventive ride and the one people queue longest for. Add Hulk, Spider-Man and Forbidden Journey and the top five here beats the top five across the walkway comfortably.

Universal Studios Florida's case rests on three specific things. Diagon Alley is the best-built environment Universal has produced in Florida outside Epic Universe — enclosed, with a proper reveal, two live shows and a wand ceremony inside it. The park has more indoor, air-conditioned attractions, which is not a small consideration in an Orlando August. And its height ceiling is lower: nine attractions carry a stick against fourteen next door, and the tallest is 51 inches rather than 54.

The third argument is the one that decides more trips than either park's ride list: motion sickness. Universal Studios Florida has a higher concentration of screen-based rides than any other major park in the United States. Three of them in one morning will do it to people who thought they were fine. If anyone in your group is susceptible, that is a park to space out rather than to spend a full day in.

Universal Orlando's two original parks are a ten-minute walk apart on either side of CityWalk, which means the comparison is not about logistics. It is about what you actually want to ride, and the two parks answer that question very differently.

This page is written for the one-day-ticket decision, because that is the version of the question most people arrive with. If you have two days and a park-to-park ticket, you are doing both and the only question is the order — which is covered at the end.

One thing worth settling before anything else: the Hogwarts Express runs only between these two parks, it is an attraction in its own right with different content in each direction, and boarding it requires a park-to-park ticket. There is no upgrade sold at the station. If Harry Potter is any part of why you booked Universal Orlando, buy park-to-park and stop thinking about it.

Head to head

“Edge” marks which side we think wins that row. A row with no edge marked is genuinely a tie.
Universal Studios FloridaIslands of Adventure
Ride roster and depthThe counts are almost identical. What differs is what the attractions are, which is the whole comparison.About 31 attractions, weighted toward screens, shows and walkthroughs. Two genuine coasters — Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit outdoors at 51 inches and Revenge of the Mummy indoors at 48 — plus Escape from Gringotts, which is part coaster and part screen.Edge
About 30 attractions, weighted hard toward rides. Five headliners at 48 inches or above, three water rides, a drop tower, and the best coaster in Florida. Most people who visit both prefer this one, and the ride slate is why.
Screens versus steelThis is the row that predicts which park a given person will name as their favourite, more reliably than any other on the page. The screen park, and it does not hide it. Transformers, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, The Simpsons Ride and Fast & Furious – Supercharged are all projection in front of a moving vehicle. Executed well, and there are a lot of them in a row.Edge
The steel park. Two launch coasters, a story coaster in Hagrid's, a drop tower and three water rides. Its screen rides — Forbidden Journey, Spider-Man and Skull Island: Reign of Kong — are the older motion-base kind and are spread around the loop rather than clustered.
Motion sickness riskIf someone in your group is prone to this, put a show or a meal between every screen ride at either park. Three in a morning is the standard way a day ends at noon. The hardest park in Orlando for anyone susceptible, harder than Hollywood Studios and much harder than Magic Kingdom. The Simpsons Ride is the worst offender because the dome screen fills your peripheral vision. Transformers is second. Men in Black spins hard in its closing sequence.Edge
Better, but not clean. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey combines a robotic arm with wraparound screens and puts people out regularly, and Spider-Man does the same at lower intensity. The coasters are physical rather than visual, which most susceptible riders tolerate far better.
Height requirementsA child of eight who has not reached 48 inches is shut out of all five Islands of Adventure headliners. Measure at home before you buy a ticket to either park.Edge
Nine attractions carry one. Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is 51 inches with a 79-inch maximum, Revenge of the Mummy is 48, Escape from Gringotts and Men in Black Alien Attack are 42, Transformers, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem and The Simpsons Ride are 40, Trolls Trollercoaster is 36, and E.T. Adventure is 34.
Fourteen attractions carry one, and the top of the list is the strictest in Orlando. The Incredible Hulk Coaster is 54 inches, Doctor Doom's Fearfall is 52, Jurassic World VelociCoaster is 51, and both Hagrid's and Forbidden Journey are 48. Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls is 44, the Bilge-Rat Barges and Jurassic Park River Adventure are 42, and Spider-Man is 40.
The Wizarding World halfThe two halves are one design. Riding the Hogwarts Express between them needs a park-to-park ticket, and an interactive wand bought on either side works on both.Edge
Diagon Alley, opened July 2014, and the better-built half on almost every measure — enclosed, with a proper reveal through a brick wall, more detailed shops, two live shows and a wand ceremony inside it. Escape from Gringotts has the best-built room in the park in its bank lobby.
Hogsmeade, opened 2010, with the better ride in Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and the better view in Hogwarts Castle. Flight of the Hippogriff at 36 inches is the only Wizarding World ride a small child can board in Orlando.
Water ridesRide all three after lunch, in clothes you do not mind soaking, with your phone in a locker. Doing them at 10 AM turns the rest of the day into a slog in wet shoes.None. Nothing in this park will get you meaningfully wet, which is either a shortfall or a relief depending on the month and the shoes you wore.Edge
Three, and two of them are serious. Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls sends a wall of water over the front of the log on the final drop, Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges will put a rider in soaked jeans for the rest of the day, and Jurassic Park River Adventure ends with an 85-foot drop that drenches the front rows.
Single rider linesTwo adults using single rider lines separately will often clear six rides in the time standby takes for two. Ride standby once for the queue, then single rider every time after.Six: Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, Revenge of the Mummy, Transformers, Escape from Gringotts, Men in Black Alien Attack and Despicable Me Minion Mayhem. They run at a third of standby or better and Universal actively pushes guests into them.Six: The Incredible Hulk Coaster, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, Doctor Doom's Fearfall, Skull Island: Reign of Kong, Jurassic World VelociCoaster and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Hagrid's does not have one, which is the single most consequential omission at the resort.
Indoor attractions and shadeCentral Florida gets a thunderstorm on most summer afternoons. Islands of Adventure loses more of its ride list to one than the park across the walkway does.Edge
Substantially more indoor square footage. The screen rides are all in buildings, Diagon Alley's interiors absorb a lot of people, and the Horror Make-Up Show is 25 air-conditioned minutes on a published schedule in a theatre that almost never fills.
Exposed. Marvel Super Hero Island has no shade worth the name, Toon Lagoon is open, and the coasters that stop for lightning are all outdoor. The Lost Continent's stone colonnades and Seuss Landing are the reliable cool corners.
Live showsNeither park runs a nightly fireworks routine that holds crowds in place, so posted waits at both fall sharply in the last hour rather than staying flat.Edge
The stronger bench, and the reason a midday here is survivable. Universal Orlando's Horror Make-Up Show has run since 1990 and is a two-hander about practical effects that is funnier than it needs to be. Most first-time guests walk straight past the door.
Thin. The Lost Continent has had no show attraction since 2018 and no ride since Poseidon's Fury closed permanently in 2023, which leaves the island with a talking fountain and a restaurant. Ollivanders and the Hogsmeade street performers are the rest of the park's staged content.
FoodThunder Falls Terrace sits behind the Jurassic Park River Adventure exit, cooks rotisserie chicken and ribs over a real wood fire, and costs about what a burger costs next door. The better counter and snack bench. The Leaky Cauldron's bangers and mash and fisherman's pie are better than a theme park has any obligation to serve, and Springfield does the most committed themed food at the resort — the Big Pink Donut at Lard Lad genuinely feeds four, and Bumblebee Man's Taco Truck is the sleeper. The better sit-down. Mythos in The Lost Continent is the nicer meal and books out on busy dates; Confisco Grille in Port of Entry takes walk-ups more reliably than any other table service on the property. Thunder Falls Terrace is the best quick service at Universal Orlando and almost nobody finds it.
Children under 40 inchesRoughly six rides for a child under 40 inches at Islands of Adventure. Magic Kingdom has about 18 attractions with no height requirement at all. That gap is real and it is the subject of its own page. The weakest of the three Universal Orlando parks for this group, and weaker than any Disney park in Orlando. DreamWorks Land, Villain-Con Minion Blast, Kang and Kodos' Twirl 'n' Hurl, E.T. Adventure at 34 inches and the shows. That is a real half-day rather than a full one.Edge
One island of it works, and it works properly. Seuss Landing has four rides at 34 inches, 36 inches and no minimum at all, plus shade, benches and the only place in the park where a four-year-old sets the pace. Camp Jurassic, Me Ship The Olive, Flight of the Hippogriff and The Cat in the Hat extend it.
Layout and walkingIf your group is splitting by height at Islands of Adventure, set the meeting point in Port of Entry rather than at either end of the ring.Edge
Backlot streets around a lagoon, with more connections between districts and shorter detours when you change your mind. Diagon Alley is the exception — one main entrance, and Universal caps entry when the land fills.
A closed ring around a lagoon with a single entrance and no path across the middle. Seuss Landing and Marvel Super Hero Island sit at opposite ends, roughly twenty minutes apart on foot. Realising at 4 PM that you left something behind costs you twenty minutes each way.

Which park, by who is in your group

The one-day answer changes more with group composition here than at any other pair of parks in Orlando, because the two parks are not competing on quality — they are competing on ride type. This is the short version.

Everything below assumes a single park ticket. If you hold park-to-park, none of it applies and you should be riding the Hogwarts Express.

The ride systems, side by side

"Screens versus coasters" is the shorthand, and it is roughly right, but the detail matters when you are deciding what a day will feel like. Here is the split by ride type.

Note what is absent from each column as much as what is in it. Universal Studios Florida has no water ride and no drop tower. Islands of Adventure has no interactive shooter and, since 2018, no theatre show.

The Wizarding World is one design split across two gates

This is the single most expensive misunderstanding at Universal Orlando, so it is worth being explicit. Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida are two halves of one thing. The Hogwarts Express connects them, it shows different scenes depending on which way you are travelling, and boarding it in either direction requires a park-to-park ticket. No upgrade is sold at the station.

On a one-park ticket you can still do a great deal. Diagon Alley admits anyone with a Universal Studios Florida ticket — you can ride Escape from Gringotts, eat at the Leaky Cauldron, buy a wand and see both live shows. Hogsmeade admits anyone with an Islands of Adventure ticket, with Hagrid's, Forbidden Journey and Flight of the Hippogriff. What you cannot do on one park is ride the train or see the other half.

On build quality, Diagon Alley is the better half. It is enclosed rather than open, it has a genuine reveal through a brick wall on the London waterfront, the shops carry more detail, and it holds two live performances and a wand ceremony inside the land. Hogsmeade has the better ride and the better silhouette, and it is where a child under 40 inches can actually board something.

Diagon Alley's constraint is capacity. The land is small, enclosed, and reached through one main entrance, and Universal caps entry when it fills. Between roughly eleven and six there is frequently a queue to get into the land before you have queued for anything inside it. Do it first or last, never in the middle.

The height gate, and why it favours one park

Islands of Adventure measures you harder than any other theme park in Orlando. That is the fact most likely to change your ticket decision and the one least likely to be on the page you booked from.

The five attractions the park is famous for — The Incredible Hulk Coaster at 54 inches, Doctor Doom's Fearfall at 52, Jurassic World VelociCoaster at 51, Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure at 48 and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at 48 — are a wall. A child of eight who has not reached 48 inches rides none of them. There is no rider-swap arrangement that changes that, only one that makes it survivable for the adults.

Universal Studios Florida is more forgiving in the band that matters most. At 40 inches a child can ride Transformers, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem and The Simpsons Ride; at 42 they add Escape from Gringotts and Men in Black Alien Attack. That is five attractions available to a 42-inch child against a considerably thinner list next door. The trade is that the park's 40-inch rides are the screen rides, which is a different conversation with a susceptible child.

Below 40 inches both parks get thin and Islands of Adventure gets thin more gracefully, because Seuss Landing is a real children's island rather than a token. Four rides at 34, 36 and no minimum, plus shade, plus benches. Add Camp Jurassic, Me Ship The Olive, Flight of the Hippogriff at 36 and The Cat in the Hat at 36 and a preschooler has roughly six rides and a solid half day.

Every one of these attractions is measured with the guest's shoes on. If your child is borderline, that is worth knowing before you plan a morning around a ride they will be turned away from at the platform.

  • Under 40 inches: Islands of Adventure, for Seuss Landing, and expect a half day rather than a full one.
  • 40 to 47 inches: Universal Studios Florida, where five or six attractions open up in that band.
  • 48 to 50 inches: either, but Islands of Adventure unlocks Hagrid's and Forbidden Journey, which are the two people talk about.
  • 51 inches and above: Islands of Adventure, with VelociCoaster and Hulk both available and nothing left off the list.
  • Adults of larger build: use the test seats. Forbidden Journey, VelociCoaster, Hulk and Hagrid's all have one outside the entrance with identical hardware, and Forbidden Journey turns guests away at the loading platform every day after the full queue.

If you have both parks and two days, do them in this order

With a park-to-park ticket and two days, the sequencing question replaces the choosing question, and there is a right answer.

Day one: Islands of Adventure. Be at the gate 45 minutes before opening, or 45 minutes before the early entry time if your hotel provides Early Park Admission. Walk to Hogsmeade — it is a genuine ten minutes from the turnstiles — and ride Hagrid's first, because it accepts no Express Pass, has no single rider line, and posts the longest waits at the resort on most days. Take VelociCoaster next while the queue is still short, then work the ring. Put Toon Lagoon's water rides after lunch and keep the outdoor coasters for the shoulders of the day, because the afternoon thunderstorm will take them out.

Day two: Universal Studios Florida. Be at the turnstiles 30 to 45 minutes early. Universal frequently opens the gates ahead of the posted hour and holds guests in Production Central, which is worth being present for. Take Diagon Alley in the first hour with the entry cap off and Gringotts posting a short wait — that is the most valuable hour available at Universal Orlando. Then ride the Hogwarts Express back to Hogsmeade in the afternoon for the second film, do the Hogsmeade things you skipped, and come back for the evening.

If you only have a day and a half, give the full day to Islands of Adventure and the half day to Diagon Alley and the Hogwarts Express. That covers the two things at this resort that nowhere else has.

One efficiency worth committing to on both days: ride the standby queue once for the attractions whose queues are part of the show — the Gringotts bank lobby with its animatronic goblins, and Hogwarts Castle at Forbidden Journey — then use single rider or Express for every repeat. Universal Express routes you past most of the good rooms.

So which one is yours?

Pick Universal Studios Florida if…

  • Diagon Alley is the environment you came to Orlando to stand in.
  • Somebody in your group cannot handle a hard motion base with a wraparound screen — this park is the one to space out rather than skip.
  • Your youngest is between 40 and 47 inches, where this park has five or six rides and the other has very few.
  • You are visiting in high summer without Express Pass and want indoor attractions to retreat into.
  • You want the better live show and the better snack bench.

Pick Islands of Adventure if…

  • Everyone in your group clears 51 inches and came for coasters.
  • You want the best roller coaster in Florida, which is Jurassic World VelociCoaster.
  • You have one day, one park, and no strong feelings about which intellectual property is on the building.
  • Your youngest is under 40 inches and you want a purpose-built children's island rather than a token.
  • You will actually use the single rider lines, which cover six attractions here.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure?

Islands of Adventure, for rides, and it is not particularly close. Jurassic World VelociCoaster, Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk Coaster is a stronger top four than the park across the walkway can field. Universal Studios Florida has the better single land in Diagon Alley and more indoor attractions, which matters in August.

If I only have one day, which park should I pick?

Islands of Adventure for most groups. Pick Universal Studios Florida instead if Diagon Alley is the specific thing you came for, if anyone in the party gets motion sick and you would rather ride a limited number of screens than none of the coasters, or if your youngest child is in the 40-to-47-inch band where Islands of Adventure has very little.

Do I need a park-to-park ticket?

You need one to ride the Hogwarts Express, which runs only between these two parks and is checked in both directions. It is a real attraction with different content each way, not a transfer service. If Harry Potter is any part of why you booked, buy park-to-park. For a coaster-focused day at Islands of Adventure alone, you can skip it.

Is Diagon Alley better than Hogsmeade?

On build quality and density of things to do, yes. Diagon Alley is enclosed, has a better reveal, more detailed shops, two live shows and a wand ceremony inside it. Hogsmeade has the better ride in Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and the better silhouette in Hogwarts Castle. Both together are the reason to buy park-to-park.

Which park is worse for motion sickness?

Universal Studios Florida, clearly. It has a higher concentration of screen-based rides than any other major park in the United States. The Simpsons Ride is the worst offender because its dome screen fills your peripheral vision, Transformers is second, and Despicable Me Minion Mayhem and Fast & Furious are milder versions of the same thing. Space them out with a show or a meal between each.

Which park has better height requirements for kids?

Universal Studios Florida has the lower ceiling — nine attractions with a requirement, topping out at 51 inches for Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit. Islands of Adventure has fourteen, topping out at 54 inches for The Incredible Hulk Coaster, and all five of its headliners need 48 inches or more. Below 40 inches, though, Islands of Adventure is the better park because Seuss Landing exists.

Does Express Pass cover Hagrid's?

No. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure has been excluded from Universal Express Pass since it opened in 2019, and it has no single rider line either. The only ways to ride it without losing two hours are rope drop, Early Park Admission if your hotel provides it, or the final hour before close. People buy Express specifically for this ride and it does not work.

Which park gets you wet?

Islands of Adventure, and more than people expect. Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls and Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges will soak you through rather than mist you, and Jurassic Park River Adventure ends with an 85-foot drop that drenches the front rows. Universal Studios Florida has no water ride at all.
