What it is

Curse of the Werewolf is a spinning coaster: the cars rotate freely as they run the track, so no two rides are the same and nobody controls which way they are facing at any given moment. The circuit runs through the woods around the Darkmoor village with dark passages, creature effects and a couple of short drops.

It is the family option in Dark Universe, and the gap between it and Monsters Unchained is enormous. Where the dark ride is designed to unsettle adults, this is played closer to a well-built fairground ghost train — atmospheric, a bit sinister, and fundamentally fun rather than frightening.

The one thing to take seriously is the spin. Free-spinning coasters affect people who are otherwise fine on roller coasters, and the rotation is unpredictable by design. If motion sickness is a factor for anyone in your party, this is the attraction that will find it.

What riding it is actually like

You board a free-spinning car at the edge of the village and the rotation starts almost immediately, which means you are frequently facing backward or sideways through the early scenes without having chosen to.

The layout weaves through the woods with a mix of covered and open sections, and the creature effects land better because you cannot anticipate which direction you will be facing when you reach them. It is a clever use of a ride system that is usually just a gimmick.

It is over quickly. Most riders want to go again, and most riders who feel unwell after it were fine on every coaster they rode earlier in the day, which tells you where the difficulty lies.

Is Curse of the Werewolf scary?

Far gentler than its neighbor, but not a nothing ride. The spinning is the defining feature and it is what upsets people rather than the drops or the speed. There are dark sections and a couple of creature moments, played closer to a fairground ghost train than to the horror of Monsters Unchained.

Tips that actually help

  • The spin is the ride. If free-spinning cars are a problem for anyone in your party, this is a skip regardless of how they handle other coasters.
  • It is the right Dark Universe ride for a family. At 40 inches and with a far lower scare level than Monsters Unchained, this is where children in this world belong.
  • Ride it after dark. The woods sections and the creature effects are considerably better with real darkness outside rather than Florida afternoon glare.
  • Do not ride it straight after a meal. Between this and Dragon Racer's Rally, these are the two attractions at Epic Universe most likely to cause trouble.
  • Waits fall off here faster than at Monsters Unchained, so if you only have time for one more thing in Dark Universe late in the evening, this is usually the cheaper one in minutes.

Curse of the Werewolf: common questions

What is the height requirement for Curse of the Werewolf?

40 inches, the same as Mario Kart and Hiccup's Wing Gliders. That makes it the Dark Universe ride a family can actually share, and it is much gentler in content than Monsters Unchained next door.

Is Curse of the Werewolf scary?

Moderately, and far less than its neighbor. There are dark passages and creature effects, played closer to a fairground ghost train than to horror. The spinning unsettles more riders than the theming does.

Does Curse of the Werewolf make people sick?

It can. The cars spin freely and unpredictably, which affects riders who are perfectly comfortable on conventional coasters. Ride it before a meal rather than after, and skip it if anyone in the party is already feeling delicate.
