Production Central at Universal Studios

Production Central is what you walk into: a plaza of white soundstage exteriors, a music stage, and the two biggest buildings in the front half of the park. It was designed to read as the working end of a studio lot, and it is the least themed part of the park by some distance. Nobody lingers here for atmosphere.

The two attractions carry it. Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is the tall X-Car coaster whose first element is a vertical lift you can see from the parking garages, and it carries the highest height requirement in the park at 51 inches. Transformers: The Ride-3D sits in the building beside it and is the park's most aggressive screen ride, a motion-base vehicle thrown through a 3D fight sequence for about four and a half minutes.

Both have single rider lines and both are Universal Express eligible, which makes this a good place to bank rides late in the day when the rest of the park is congested. Rip Ride Rockit in particular runs a single rider queue that is frequently a quarter of the standby time, because the ride loads two per row and singles fill gaps constantly.

Practically, this is also the corridor everyone walks four or five times. TODAY Cafe near the front is the only serious coffee in the park and the fastest breakfast if you mobile order it before you tap in.

Production Central tips

Do not rope drop this land. Both rides hold their capacity all day and both have single rider lines; Diagon Alley does not open a second entrance when it gets busy.
Rip Ride Rockit's song selection is made on the restraint keypad after you are locked in, and there is a hidden menu of unlisted tracks reached by holding the logo button. Cast members will not stop you looking for it.
Transformers loads riders three across in each row and the outer seats get thrown noticeably harder than the middle. Ask for the middle if you are on the fence about the motion.
Mobile order breakfast at TODAY Cafe before you go through the turnstiles. The morning line there is one of the worst in the park and the app does not care where you are standing.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

A 51-inch X-Car coaster with a vertical lift, a non-inverting loop and a soundtrack you pick yourself from a keypad in the restraint.

Rip Ride Rockit opened in 2009 and is the tallest, loudest and most exposed thing at Universal Studios Florida. It is a Maurer X-Car coaster, which means individual cars with pivoting seats rather than a conventional train, and the ride hardware is why it feels different from anything at Disney: the seats are wide, the restraint is a lap bar with an over-the-shoulder harness, and the track uses shapes that a standard coaster train physically cannot take.

Tips for Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

Use the single rider line. It is the best on the resort along with Revenge of the Mummy, and because the cars seat two per row the singles queue moves almost continuously.
Ride it after dark. The queue collapses in the last two hours, the lift-hill view over Orlando is worth having, and the ride itself is less punishing without the heat.
There is a hidden track menu: hold the logo button on the keypad for several seconds and enter a three-digit number to reach songs that are not on the main list. Nobody will stop you.
Use the test seat outside the entrance if the harness is a question. This is the tightest restraint in the park and being turned away at the platform is a bad way to find out.
Everything loose goes in a locker before you board, including phones and glasses cases. Travel light or leave your bag with somebody outside; the locker bank is a bigger time sink than the ride.

TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D

A motion-base vehicle thrown through four and a half minutes of 3D robot combat, and the most aggressive screen ride in the park.

Transformers uses the same ride system as Islands of Adventure's Spider-Man: a motion-base vehicle on a track that moves through a series of rooms, alternating between physical sets and enormous 3D screens, with the vehicle's own motion synchronised to what is happening on screen. When it works — and here it works — you cannot tell where the built set ends and the projection begins.

Tips for TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D

Middle seats take substantially less punishment than the outer two in each row. Ask at the load platform if motion is a concern; the team will place you.
The single rider line here is genuinely good and frequently runs at a quarter of standby, because the vehicles seat twelve and gaps appear constantly.
Do not ride this in the same hour as The Simpsons Ride or Despicable Me Minion Mayhem. Three screen rides in quick succession is how people lose an afternoon.
Front row gives the cleanest 3D alignment. If you have ridden before and found the effect blurry from the back, that is why.
It runs in the dark and air conditioned throughout, which makes it a reasonable choice in the worst heat of the afternoon if motion is not an issue for you.

Transformers Character Meet

Full-height walking Transformers characters that meet outside the ride building, and the most impressive costumes at Universal Orlando.

Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Megatron appear on a rotation outside the Transformers building, and the costumes are the reason to stop. They are enormous, mechanically articulated, and the performers inside them do a genuinely good job of moving like something that is not a person in a suit.

Tips for Transformers Character Meet

Check the times in the app rather than hoping. The rotation is scheduled and the gaps between appearances are long.
Watch two or three interactions before putting a small child in front of these. The scale catches people out.
Megatron gets the best lines and the shortest queue, because most families steer toward Optimus Prime.
There is no shade at the meeting spot. In summer this is a five-minute wait that feels like fifteen.
