What it is

Illumination's Minion Cafe opened in 2023 next to Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, replacing the older cafe on the same site. The conceit is that the Minions have taken over a restaurant kitchen, which is carried through the decor with more commitment than these things usually get — the dining rooms are full of jokes and the ordering area has a working sense of humor.

The menu is American comfort food with themed presentation: fried chicken, mac and cheese, salads and a banana-themed dessert program, since a Minion restaurant was never going to avoid bananas. Portions are large and the execution is above the park average.

It is also one of the largest indoor air-conditioned dining rooms in the park, which is the practical reason to plan around it. Seating at Universal Studios Hollywood is a genuine constraint at lunchtime, and this is one of the few places with enough of it.

Our verdict

Better than a Minion-branded restaurant has any right to be, with proper portions and one of the few large air-conditioned dining rooms in the park. A sensible default lunch.

What to order

The dishes this kitchen is actually known for. Menus change seasonally, so treat this as what to look for rather than a guaranteed list.

  • Fried chicken plate
  • Minion mac and cheese
  • Banana cream dessert
  • Chicken and waffle sliders
  • Garden salad bowl

Tips for Illumination's Minion Cafe

  • Mobile order and skip the counter. This is one of the highest-traffic ordering areas in the park between noon and 2pm.
  • The dining rooms extend further back than the entrance suggests. If the front looks full, walk through — there is usually seating at the rear.
  • The banana dessert items are the ones worth ordering. The savory food is fine; the desserts are the part the kitchen clearly enjoys.
  • This is where to eat if you have a child who has just come off Minion Mayhem and is not going to accept any other restaurant.

Fried Chicken Plate

Illumination's Minion Cafe

$21.99

Bone-in fried chicken with sides, served in the large themed dining rooms next to Despicable Me Minion Mayhem.

Our take: Above the park average and generously portioned, which is the most you can reasonably ask of a Minion-branded restaurant. A sensible default lunch on the Upper Lot.

Savory

Minion Mac and Cheese

Illumination's Minion Cafe

$14.99

A baked macaroni cheese served in a themed dish, with a crumb topping and enough of it to work as a shared side.

Our take: The reliable order for a child who will not eat anything else, and a decent vegetarian option in a park short of them. Nothing to write home about, and nothing wrong with it.

Savory Vegetarian

Banana Cream Dessert

Illumination's Minion Cafe

$10.99

A layered banana cream dessert in a themed vessel, part of the banana program that a Minion restaurant was never going to avoid.

Our take: The desserts are the part of this kitchen that clearly enjoys itself, and this is the best of them. Better than the savory food it follows.

Illumination's Minion Cafe: common questions

Is Minion Cafe good, or just themed?

Both, unusually. The theming is thorough and the food is above the park average, particularly the fried chicken and the desserts. It is not a destination restaurant, but it is a good default lunch inside the gate.

Is there enough seating?

Yes, and that is a real advantage here. It has one of the largest indoor air-conditioned dining rooms in the park, and the rear sections stay open when the front looks full. Seating is a genuine constraint at Universal Studios Hollywood at lunchtime.

Are there gluten-free options?

Yes, there are gluten-free items on the menu and staff will talk through allergen information at the counter. Ask before ordering rather than after, since preparation varies by item.
