What it is

Oak & Star Tavern is the hub's big counter-service operation: smoked meats, sausages, sandwiches and sides, ordered at a counter and eaten at real tables. It handles volume well, it has a beer list worth looking at, and it sits at the point every route through the park crosses, which makes it the default lunch for a lot of visitors.

The smoked meat is competent barbecue rather than destination barbecue. The brisket is the item to order and the sides are better than they need to be. What sets it apart from the counters behind the portals is that you can get a plate of real food, in air conditioning, without a reservation and without a themed queue.

It also solves the mixed-party problem better than anywhere else at Epic Universe. Someone can eat a full plate, someone can have a sandwich, someone can have a beer and nothing else, and nobody has to walk to a different world to do it.

Our verdict

The most useful meal at Epic Universe rather than the best one. Competent barbecue, real seating, no reservation, and it sits where your day already goes.

What to order

The dishes this kitchen is actually known for. Menus change seasonally, so treat this as what to look for rather than a guaranteed list.

  • Smoked brisket plate
  • Sausage platter
  • Pulled pork sandwich
  • Mac and cheese
  • Smoked turkey

Tips for Oak & Star Tavern

  • Mobile order it. This is the busiest counter in the park at 12:30 and the pickup window you want will be gone if you order once you are hungry.
  • Order the brisket over the pulled pork. It is the item the kitchen is actually built around.
  • Indoor seating fills first; the outdoor tables on the hub side are usually free and shaded in the afternoon.
  • It is the best group solution in the park. Everyone eats what they want, at once, without crossing a portal.

Smoked brisket plate

Oak & Star Tavern

$24

Sliced smoked brisket with two sides, ordered at the counter and collected at a window. The plate the smokehouse is actually built around.

Our take: Order this over the pulled pork every time. It is competent barbecue rather than great barbecue, and it is the fastest proper meal in the park.

Near the top of the list Savory Gluten-friendly

Mac and cheese

Oak & Star Tavern

$8

A side of baked macaroni and cheese, large enough to work as a child's entire meal.

Our take: The cheapest way to feed a small child a hot meal in the hub. Order it as a side for the table and let them work through it.

Oak & Star Tavern: common questions

Is Oak & Star Tavern worth eating at?

For a fast group lunch, yes — it is the best-organized counter-service in the park with real tables and air conditioning. As a destination meal it is ordinary barbecue at theme-park prices.

Can you mobile order at Oak & Star Tavern?

Yes, through the Universal app, and you should. It is the busiest counter in the park at peak lunch and ordering ahead is the difference between eating at 12:40 and eating at 1:20.

Does Oak & Star Tavern serve alcohol?

Yes, including a beer list that is better than a counter-service operation needs. It is one of the more comfortable places in the park to sit with a drink and a plate at the same time.
