What it is

Villain-Con Minion Blast opened in 2023 in the building that held Shrek 4-D, and it is structurally unlike anything else at Universal Orlando. There is no vehicle. You stand on a slow-moving walkway holding a handheld blaster and shoot targets on screens as they pass, working through a series of rooms with a running score.

The premise is a villain convention that goes wrong, which is a thin excuse for a shooting gallery and does not pretend otherwise. What matters is the format: no height requirement, no motion, no transfer, no restraints, continuous loading. In a park where nine attractions have a height stick and six put you in front of a moving screen, this is the one substantial thing everybody in a family can do together.

Scores are stored to your park ticket, so a second run builds on the first and the leaderboards mean something across a trip. Whether that appeals is a matter of taste, but it does give the attraction genuine repeat value that a one-and-done walkthrough would not have.

What riding it is actually like

The queue runs through a convention floor of villain booths, which is the best-written part of the attraction and worth reading rather than walking past. Blasters are handed out at the entrance to the walkway.

Once on the belt you move at a steady walking pace through six or so rooms, each one a large screen with targets on it. The blaster registers hits with a light and the score board updates as you go. It is not difficult and it is not trying to be; the pleasure is in the volume of things to shoot at rather than precision.

It runs about six minutes and the belt does not stop, so it does not really have a middle or an end so much as a straight run to a total score. Guests who stay still and hold the trigger down score better than guests who aim carefully, which tells you most of what you need to know about the design.

Is Illumination's Villain-Con Minion Blast scary?

Nothing in here is frightening. It is however extremely loud and extremely bright throughout, with no quiet stretch, and it runs on a moving walkway with no obvious way to step off partway. For a child who is overwhelmed by noise and light rather than by scares, that combination is worth knowing about in advance.

Permitted on board

No transfer required. Guests board a slow-moving walkway and can remain in a wheelchair or ECV throughout, and the blaster is handheld rather than mounted. This is the most accessible substantial attraction at Universal Studios Florida.

Tips that actually help

  • The posted wait overstates it. This loads continuously, so a 40-minute board frequently clears in 20. Judge it by how far the queue physically extends rather than the number.
  • Scan the same park ticket on a second run. Scores accumulate and the leaderboard is the main reason to do it twice.
  • Hold the trigger down rather than aiming. The scoring rewards volume of fire, not accuracy, and children work this out faster than adults do.
  • This is the best attraction in the park for a guest who cannot transfer out of a wheelchair, and staff are used to boarding chairs onto the belt. Just say so at the entrance.
  • It is very loud and very bright end to end. For a noise-sensitive child, bring ear defenders rather than assuming a no-height-requirement attraction is a gentle one.

Timing

Best time to ride
First thing in the morning when it is a walk-on, or any time the physical queue is inside the building.
Typical wait
Posted at 25 to 45 minutes midday but usually clears far faster; continuous loading means the board is unreliable.

Illumination's Villain-Con Minion Blast: common questions

Is there a height requirement for Villain-Con Minion Blast?

No. There is no height stick, no motion base and no restraint. Guests stand on a slow-moving walkway, which makes it the most broadly accessible substantial attraction at Universal Studios Florida and one of very few things a family with a preschooler can do together here.

Can you stay in a wheelchair on Villain-Con Minion Blast?

Yes. The moving walkway takes wheelchairs and ECVs directly with no transfer, and the blaster is handheld rather than mounted to a vehicle. Mention it at the entrance and staff will board you at the accessible point.

Does your score carry over between rides?

Yes, if you scan the same park ticket. Scores accumulate across runs and feed a leaderboard, which is the main argument for riding it more than once. Different tickets in the same party build separate totals.

How long is Villain-Con Minion Blast?

About six minutes on the moving walkway, plus the queue through the convention floor. Because the belt runs continuously the throughput is high, and posted waits are usually a significant overstatement of the real one.
